On November 4, 1979, Iranians seized our American embassy in Tehran and held 52 Americans hostage in terrifying captivity for 444 days. As the embassy was being taken and Americans were being hunted in the streets, brave Canadians, at great personal risk to their own lives and liberty, hid in their personal residences six other Americans who had managed to get away. The Canadians concealed them for almost three months. The Canadian government, its Parliament having met in secret session for the first time since WWII, then devised a plan whereby it created fake Canadian citizenship for the endangered Americans and smuggled them to freedom under Canadian passports. The Canadians then closed their own embassy and left the country the same day. They clearly had a lot to loose. The Canadian Caper

Canadian gold medal winner in the women's cross-country 1.1 km sprint at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. She is just wonderful. Her joy in her achievement and her love of her home is infectious. Just try not to be moved by it. Good for you, Canada!
